Ten Easy Ways to Prevent Disease

Written by Erin Currin

The body is a system requiring perfect balance in order to thrive.  The body generally functions best at a pH balance between 7.4 and 7.6.

Without balance, the body cannot perform basic functions as easily.  Since all functions of the body are carried out through the use of chemicals, whether as signals used to communicate or as the tools to do the job, any chemical imbalance has the potential to shut the body down.

When the body tends toward one end or the other on the pH scale, it will do whatever it can to create balance so the process of living may continue.  In order to restore balance, the body will rob the acids and minerals from the different parts of the body, like the muscles, glands, and bones, believing that it will be repaired later on.

After many years of “robbing Peter to pay Paul,” a serious deficit may be created leading to many different conditions like anemia or osteoporosis, for example.

In addition, disease thrives in an acidic environment.  The acidity of the body gives bacteria and viruses the things they need to multiply.  And, since the body is in deficit from shifting resources to just get by, the immune system is in no shape to fight off these potentially hazardous invaders.

You can fight back by eating a balanced diet of both acidic and alkalizing foods.

Test your pH using litmus paper or pH testing strips.  (You can find them online.  Just Google litmus paper urine.)

The standard American diet (SAD) tends to be acidic.  With fast food, processed ingredients, and lots of meat and cheese, most people end up more acidic.

Here are 10 simple suggestions for alkalizing your diet to prevent disease.

      1. First thing in the morning, drink the juice from one half of a lemon or lime with 8 to 12 ounces of water (preferable spring water with a high mineral content).
      2. Avoid coffee
      3. Replace that baked potato or French fries with a baked sweet potatoes or sweet potato fries.
      4. Avoid refined sugar and refined flour. (Beware, it comes in lots of places you may not expect.)
      5. Eat at least one green salad a day… the darker green, the better.
      6. Avoid black tea.  Try green, red or white teas instead.
      7. Add miso or seaweed to soups, salads and other dishes.
      8. Minimize consumption of meat, poultry, fish, and dairy products.
      9. Choose more alkalizing grains, like wild rice or quinoa.
      10. Switch from regular table salt to sea salt
